First Impresssions

Ojuola Tolulope Daniel ©
They say first impressions lasts forever, so I will try and create an impression in my first entry here. Good or bad, you never might know how far what you write goes until you start meeting people and they tell you how much they enjoyed your last post or otherwise. A little introduction I would like to give myself before I go any further. My name is Tolulope Ojuola, the latest addition to this infotainment Naija™ clique, been blogging for the last two years via http://tolulopeojuola.blogspot.com/ mainly doing poetry, but now it is time to dive into a seemingly different territory. For my new readers, we will begin a journey of self-discovery together and for my old readers, we will continue to get better. I will also like to note that I would really like your feedbacks, so your comments will be amazing, just keep them coming. Been smitten inside my own pool of self-pity for a little while now and my rooster was obviously snoring when day light came by to say hello. Found a lot of interesting articles to read on the internet recently, especially articles that have extreme slanderous tendencies and some that even depict the truth. What has amazed me however in the last few days is the accuracy of these events if compared to my everyday life. These recent occurrences has led to a resolution on my part not to write or blog about anything that would be morally degrading nor morally upgrading for the next few entries because I seem to have lost the true meaning of the word. It simply seems as though it does not exist in this world that I live in. The society defines what is morally acceptable and yet the same society at regular intervals would rival that same assumption (Egyptian Crisis). Bringing it home, morality as defined by Nigerians often shake the foundations of the religion that most of us profess when we see what the custodians of those religions and the scribes that inscribed the moral codes into the sands of time, do in their spare when they assume nobody is watching. At several points in life, certain issues have cropped up for discourse and most likely the issue of morality and immorality were never adequately addressed. I remember while we were growing up, certain words were outlawed to us, we were deprived of certain opportunities to do certain things with certain individuals simply because according to our society the environment had a moral code that we were supposed to abide by and live with. At different intervals, this laws or codes were adjusted in order to accommodate the excesses of the said custodians and scribes. And over the years, the age old system of ethics and morals started failing and slowly the humankind’s perspective of everything began to change, hence the so-called state of moral decadence. In recent times, our leaders have become so preoccupied with the products (either negative or positive) that they want to dole out that their ignorance of the failed ethical system does not even bother them. And when I mention leaders in this context, I am talking about you, I am talking about that newly called Minister of God (Christian or Muslim), I am also talking about the evil bosses and the lazy employees in each and every organization as defined by the so called units of the society. A systematic appraisal shows that at the expense of moral or ethical development, showmanship and materialism has become the bedrock of leadership especially in a continent such as ours (Africa). I am writing this piece in anger, especially to the social media activists that spend precious times fighting the government, to take a step backwards and look inwards. The individuals in government can only perform so well with little distractions, our abuse of their persona is enough irrespective of the fact that they deserve it or not. I have come to the conclusion that we are all as guilty as the incumbent president, governor, senator or chairman. We all our choices, or didn’t we? We had an opportunity to exert our influences over our choice of the political leadership that we got; it is too late for us to start crying over spilt milk and using our positions as authority in our spheres of life to undermine the sovereignty of the central individuals that are at the mantle of power. We were given a choice some years ago and it was our collective decision to facilitate the emergence of the existing leadership of this country. Hence we should stop trying to facilitate a revolution in a society that we helped to destroy, because basically we are all a part of the bigger problem. What we should clamor for in actual fact is an evolution. A change that is not just birthed in the words that it represents; A change that will ensure the reorientation of the citizenry instead of a continuous poisoning of the minds of people against a leadership whose persona you once upon a time endorsed. Isn’t it ironic when you hear these same individuals after their long years in political appointments talk about the issues surrounding leadership in the country? Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently made some strange remarks about the failure of the younger generation of leaders in Nigeria and their inability to ensure that Nigeria becomes indeed a better country irrespective of our challenges. When past leaders talk like that, it only shows that the system called Nigeria is not just a failed system, it is quite disgraceful and does not need a revolution like most people are clamoring for, but a complete overhaul that can be best termed as an evolution. In truth, the change that we all seek is not so far, neither is it impossible in this our times, despite the fact that the moral code as defined by the society now has a new definition, a definition that is often scary to mention, even in the halls of the most excellent of churches, mosques and governmental agencies. Let us allow ourselves to believe in that possibility and our generation will be grateful for it.
